Rolling for InspirationCampaignsSession 30: The Great Cavern

Beneath the shattered stone of Wave Echo Cave lies a chamber history forgot—until tonight.

In this session, the party descended deeper into the ruins, finally standing upon the scarred battlefield of an ancient war. What they found wasn’t just dust and bones—it was movement in the dark. The Forge of Spells was close, and the dead were restless.

Echoes of War

Wave Echo Cave has always been shrouded in mystery, but this chamber was more than stone—it was a tomb. Dried corpses of dwarves, gnomes, orcs, ogres, and humans lay across the cavern floor, the aftermath of a violent clash centuries ago. Thanks to a sharp memory and a solid History check, the players recalled the tale of the Phandelver Pact and the battle that once raged here. It was the final stand to protect the Forge of Spells—and now, it would become their battleground.

When Lazmr invoked Divine Sense, the truth emerged: nearly a dozen undead were already watching. From the dust, they began to rise.

Fireball First, Questions Later

The party didn’t hesitate. Before most of the undead had even shifted, Yami hurled a Fireball into the heart of the battlefield. The explosion lit up the chamber—and a brazier—incinerating Mansur and Parts outright, and scorching others like Spruce, Jarvis, and E’ting. It was a brutal opening that gave the party momentum they’d never lose.

Zend followed the fire with fury. With Hordebreaker and Surprise Attack, he cut through E’ting and Jarvis in a matter of seconds, his insect swarm delivering a final punctuating sting. His performance was so swift and surgical that even the undead seemed startled.

Meanwhile, Akkira conjured a murder of spectral dagger-birds, which tore Necro apart midair. Larn and Lazmr added precision strikes with spells and pitchforks, while Scabbers, the party’s acid-breathing lizard, melted Rot into oblivion from atop a table.

And then there was Carlos the Celestial Steed—who galloped into battle, reared on a table, and slammed radiant hooves into another undead, nearly toppling it with divine style.

Crimson Sparks in the Dark

While the battlefield below cleared rapidly, Yatendouji turned his attention to the shadows above. Using his Blood Hunter’s Crimson Rite, he activated a lightning-infused crossbow bolt that lit up the high ledges—and revealed even more undead lurking in the gloom.

With a crackling blast, the bolt struck Chomp, who reeled under the surge of necrotic energy and lightning. The illumination briefly revealed a final ghoul hiding in the dark—still untouched but now very, very visible.

MVPs and Signature Moments

  • Yami: Kicked off the combat with devastating AoE magic.
  • Zend: Struck twice in one round, dropped two enemies, and never broke stride.
  • Akkira: Controlled the battlefield with conjured birds and haunting flair.
  • Lazmr: Skewered foes with ease, leaving them impaled and twitching.
  • Scabbers: Acid-spewing lizard MVP. Enough said.
  • Carlos the Steed: Turned the tide with a divine stomp that echoed across the cavern.
  • Yatendouji: Revealed hidden threats and nailed a cinematic lightning strike from afar.

Looking Ahead

With nearly all the undead in the lower chamber defeated and three more lurking on the upper ledge, the Forge of Spells lies just ahead. But if these guardians were just the vanguard… what horrors still await?

“There are more up on the ledge.” – Lazmr
“Zend twirls, hurls his axe, and takes another down.” – Player narration
“Tiny lizard. Big acid spew.” – The DM

Stay tuned for the next session as the party ascends the ledges and presses onward toward the heart of Wave Echo Cave—and perhaps the truth behind the Forge itself.
