How to Homebrew a Feat on D&D Beyond

Feats for Everything and Everyone
Dungeons & Dragons feats give characters a virtually unlimited array of options to customize their characters’ abilities, but, what if you want to create something that hasn’t been done before?
D&D Beyond is the official repository for all things D&D, including more than 150 feats at last count for every purpose. It also allows you to create and share Homebrew items. There were over 56,000 feats in the Homebrew Feats section of the website last time I looked, and you can add your own and share them with your own an account.
I recently had a situation come up where I needed to recreate an existing feat and thought it would be a good opportunity to show you how it can be done. In my Voxels & Valor campaign we converted our characters to the 2024 ruleset when the characters reached level 4. It was the week after the new Player’s Handbook (PHB) came out (you can check out my review here) and, at my son’s suggestion, I tossed the idea out at the group. They agreed and they spent the next week creating 2024 versions of their existing characters.
We quickly found out that my Paladin, who is a water Genasi did not have his Call to the Wave Feat available to him when creating the 2024 version of his character. In an effort to keep up feature parity between editions, I took a look at the D&D Beyond Homebrew options to create the Call to the Wave Feat.
Creating Call to the Wave
Create the Feat’s Shell
First, navigate to D&D Beyond and open the Collections menu. In the Homebrew section there is an option for Create Feat. Clicking on the link will open the Create Homebrew Feat page, where you’ll see options to filter existing feats to use as a template for your feat. I’m going to create a feat from scratch, but you can much more easily create one from a templated base feat.
Filling out the required basic information is simple. We completed the fields in the table below and clicked the Create Feat button. Note that if some of the fields are not available at first, they will becomes available after clicking the Create Feat button.
Name: | Call to the Wave (supplement) |
Description: | You know the Shape Water cantrip. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for this spell. |
Snippet | You know the Shape Water cantrip. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for this spell. |
Feat Tags: | Origin |
Total Number… | 1 |
Add Prerequisites
Next, we add the prerequisites for the feat. They were simple. Click the Add a Prerequisite button and enter this information:
Description: | Requires third level Water Genasi |
To add prerequisites, choose a prerequisite type from the dropdown menu, then select the Sub-Type and value. Here are the two prerequisites that I added to the listing:
Type | Sub-Type | Value |
Species | Water Genasi | 1 |
Level | Character Level | 3 |
Add Spells
Finally, I added the Shape Water spell to the Spells list by clicking Add a Spell and choosing Shape Water for the Spell field. No other information is required to complete this. Click the Save button and you’re done.
Congratulations on creating your first Homebrew Feat on D&D Beyond!
